(Woodinville, WA) Boogie has been having a great time with his K9 Nose Work class.
For those not familiar with Nose Work, it's where a dog has to learn to search for a particular scent - in this case Birch Oil. They have to find it and then give some sort of indication to let the handler know they've found it.
Today for class we went to a park. Boogie did awesome....as usual.
The first hide was at the bottom of a fence post and hidden underground. No problem.
Second hide was about three feet up in the trunk of a 50' tall tree. No problem.
Third hide was in a pipe sticking up out of the ground. Off we go. Dogs must be kept on leash at all times. Any type and length of leash or long-line is allowed. I use a Flexi.
The other person you see in the picture is our instructor.
He's closing in on it now.
He's now standing up on the pipe. He started pawing the pipe and looking up at me.
That is his indication to me that he found it. I look down in the pipe and sure enough it's in there. No problem!
While it was a large park area it took Boogie less than 90 seconds to find it. On this particular hide, the other dogs in class took anywhere from four minutes to 12 minutes.
This sport really shows me what a world is out there that we humans know nothing about. Truly amazing they can find such a small little thing just using their nose.
Good job, Boogie.
