(Cottonwood, AZ) Late this afternoon we arrived at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Arizona which is about 20 miles from Sedona. It is a very large park that has RV sites and tent sites. There are hiking trails, horseback trails, biking trails, fishing lakes, and much more.
We found a spot with a nice view of the surrounding mountains. Our spot was also right near a short trail that went up a hill where we had a view of the surrounding area. Fortunately it was a short trail as it was really hot today. Here is the view of our RV from about 1/2 the way up the hill. Even though the park is big it isn't really busy right now.
When we got to the top of the hill we were pleasantly surprised to see the city of Jerome off in the distance.
For those of you not familiar with Jerome, it is a historic copper mining town located between Prescott and Flagstaff. While it was once the fourth largest city in Arizona with a population of 15,000 people in the 1920's, it is now a thriving tourist and artist community of about 450. For those of you that have followed our website/blog over the past couple years you may remember our visit to Jerome. We were quite surprised when we got to the top of the hill at our RV park here and found that we could see Jerome.
As we made our way around the top of the hill we were also surprised to see Tuzigoot National Monument in the distance.
Mike wrote up a very information post on this when he visited it last year - along with some great pictures. Basically, Tuzigoot is a two to three story pueblo ruin on the summit of a limestone and sandstone ridge.
The dogs weren't so interested in the scenery but they were having a lot of fun chasing lizards - or at least trying to. They were all on leash and we just don't move as suddenly as they do in unexpected directions. So they didn't have a whole lot of luck but that didn't stop them from trying.
Boogie and Wazzu both tend to get hot really fast in the sun. So when we got around to the side of the hill we started from I took those two back to the RV while Mike, Sparkie, and Slugger continued on the walk.
On the way back to the RV Boogie dug himself a little trench in the shade and plopped down - he wasn't going to move.
Wazzu took this opportunity to chase lizards her way. Leave it to Wazzu to make friends with a lizard. She saw one and started stalking it very very slowly.
Only Wazzu can get so close. She was only about two inches from the lizard.
Darn, wouldn't you know, suddenly out of the shade darts Boogie and scares the lizard away. You could tell Wazzu was really hurt and disappointed. After all, she'd worked so hard to get that lizard's trust built up.
Just before sunset, after it had cooled down a little bit, we took the dogs on a walk around a little lake. There were a lot of people fishing so I guess there must be something to catch.
We didn't realize how fast the sun went down here. We'd only been walking about 10 minutes when it was obvious we weren't going to be able to take a long walk at all. I snapped one last shot of the lake before the sun went down.
We took a short cut back to the car but still ended up walking in the pitch dark for the last 15 minutes or so. Poor Boogie had to go on a three foot lead as I was so afraid something might jump out of the bushes and try to snatch him up. We made it back safely but I imagine Boogie ate a lot of stuff I wouldn't approve of since I couldn't see what he was doing!
Just before we went on that hike there were a lot of beautiful cloud formations that were so colorful. I couldn't resist sharing this one with you.
