Time with Asami

(Olympia, WA) We had two really great days to visit with our niece Asami who came over from London to visit. This trip over is the first time we've seen her since she left a couple years ago. It sure seems a lot longer than that!

Mike, the Travelin' Trio, and Asami went for a hike at the Beaver Pond. As always they had a great time. Asami is trying to convince me that she saw a slug eating a leaf...and she says she could hear it crunching! Any of you believe that? She tried to tell me that since her eyesight is getting worse, her hearing is getting better. That is some awesome hearing I think! Ha ha!

We spent the rest of the time just visiting, oh and laughing at silly Boogie. Each passing day he gets bigger and more entertaining. I think he's becoming more comfortable with his surroundings each day and is really coming out of his shell.

He's starting to play with toys. He really loves this red squeeky ball and thinks it's really fun to pounce on it.

While he doesn't really like being held all that much, he did spend some time in Asami's lap and had quite a fine time.

Remember how a couple days ago he had no idea how to do stairs? Well now he races up and down the stairs like he's been doing them his whole life.

The big dogs aren't all that interested in interacting with Boogie yet. So today he decided that maybe if he jumped on Sparkie's back she'd play with him. Well, sorta...

After trying to play with everyone and every thing he actually decided to settle down for a bit.

We were really impressed with how smart he is! We were upstairs and everyone was out in the kitchen preparing dinner. I was lying down in the living room and decided this would be a good time to work on recalls. So I called Boogie and he came running just as fast as he possibly could. Good job little guy. But as soon as he got his treat, he ran back to the kitchen to help. I called him again. Bingo, he came immediately. Off he went again. But by now, after just two times, he had figured out the game. So this time he just ran 3/4 of the way to the kitchen and then turned around and waited for me to call him. He totally got the game! Pretty soon he would run away and then turn around and run back before I had a chance to call him. What a smart little guy!

In addition to having fun with our new little puppy we had a truly fabulous time visiting with Asami. It was hard to say goodbye when we left late this evening.

FIFTY YEARS!!

(Olympia, WA) No that's not my age! (yet)

Today was the day I had been planning for many months. And from all the comments we got I think it was a success!

January 1, 1957 my parents were married - just 30 minutes into the new year! They had a small wedding with only four people in attendance. But today we had a 50th anniversary party with about 120 people in attendance.

(This was my attempt at fancy photography - see the cake in the mirror.)

You may wonder why we had a party six months after the official anniversary date. Well even though we have a very close-knit family, we don't have a close family. In fact, on my parents date of January 1, they were in Olympia at their house, my brother and his girlfriend were in Canada at his house, our niece Asami was in Europe where she lives, our other niece Yumi was - well we're never sure exactly where Yumi is (teehee), and we were in Florida. So as you can see we aren't close in proximity.

From left: Asami, Mom, Dad, Deb, Mike, Yumi, Dave, Joanna

But today we all came together! Mom's brother and sister-in-law came from Oregon as did all their kids and spouses. It really was so great to have so much family together again. It really is a rare thing now days so it was fantastic.

My brother Dave, Mom, Dad, and me.

In addition to family, many of my parents' friends came to help celebrate the big day. The party was held at The Olympia Golf and Country Club. The have a very nice facility that overlooks Puget Sound. We piped in music from the 50's-60's era, decorated the place, had lots of food, and a beautiful cake.

The cake on top is a carrot cake, the flat cake is half chocolate with chocolate Bavarian creme filling, and half is a white cake with vanilla Bavarian creme filling. Mmmm, good.

As a suprise, I had arranged for a presentation to take place shortly after the gathering started. I spoke a little bit and then showed a five minute slide type presentation complete with music (that wasn't really as loud as I'd hoped). Then my brother and two neices spoke - it was all very touching. After that we had some of their friends tell some stories of memories they had of my parents over the year. Mike then spoke and had everyone laughing.

Finally we played my dad's favorite song (Sha-Boom) for my parents to dance to. Then we had them cut the cake. The rest of the afternoon was spent mingling and eating both hold and cold finger foods, and of course, lots of cake!

From what I could tell, my parents seemed to have enjoyed themselves. Phew, success!!

Happy 50th Anniversary, Mom and Dad.

New Lessons

(Olympia, WA) We spent the daytime at my parents house the last couple days. Of course the highlight was getting to see our niece, Asami. She arrived in the wee hours of the morning Friday.

We, okay so it was just me, have been teasing her about her new found British accent. It sounds so weird and seems a little fake - only because we have heard her speak "Amercian" all her life. So to suddenly hear her speak with this new accent just seems a little weird.

But getting to spend time with her these past two days has been fantastic. Oh how I wish she didn't have to go back. I don't know when she'll be able to come back here but until they make RV's that can travel across the ocean, we won't be able to go over to England to see her.

Boogie fell in love with Asami right away.

Saturday I decided that it was high time that Boogie learned to do stairs. It was quite a lot for that little brain to figure out. Boogie really wants to be with me but when I went down the stairs without him he was quite perplexed.

So I came just one step down and called him. It must look like a long way down for such a little guy.

After quite a bit of time and a number of treats he finally came down one step!

We thought we were on a roll as it looked like he was going to do the next step as well. But instead he turned around and went back to the top. He was a trooper though and didn't give up - he just started over. And eventually, he made it TWO steps!!

I was pretty sure he was going to make it no problem now! But wait. Now he decided he couldn't go up or down!

Eventually he decided that "up" was the safer of his two choices. Oh my. This could take a long time. But after a few more minutes he decided that this was no problem and away he went - just like an old pro.

Once he got it, he decided it was pretty fun and went up and down a few times. Oh my, the stairmaster for puppies, sure can tire a guy out.

We thought he might sleep for a couple hours. The kids (and adults) were anxious to play with him but we couldn't wake him up. I'd lift him up and try to stand him on his feet and he'd just plop down like jello. He slept the whole day.

But then we made the mistake of feeding him dinner! It's like putting rocket fuel in him. He was zooming around the RV growing and barking so much it was scaring the dogs. After quite some time he fuel wore off and he was ready for bed.

Today he had no middle ground, he was either sound asleep or a real terror....I mean terrier!

Taking It Easy

(Rochester, WA) Boogie and I stayed around the RV today while Mike and the dogs went out hiking. Inside we worked on a few things like come and sit. On our potty walks we made sure to say hi to various people. One time we were lucky enough to meet a lady with two dachshunds. As usual, the split second Boogie saw them he stopped in his tracks. Then as the dogs moved toward him he ran away from them to the end of his leash crying. When I wouldn't let him run away, he ran and hid behind my legs. But after a minute or two they all sniffed each other and all was fine. Then Boogie would dash at them and do big play bows and bark and bark. But those dogs were too fat to play. It was a good learning lesson though.

Slugger was totally mystified and hurt when he saw that we gave his job away this evening. We finished a container of yogurt and instead of letting Slugger lick it out (it's been his job for years) we let the puppy clean it out. As you can see, Boogie has a lot of learning left to do on this chore.

As Mike was going out to feed the dogs he noticed a double rainbow. One was very strong and easy to see - but the second one was too dim to show up in the picture. We could see the stronger one from end to end.

Unfortunately, we didn't see any pots of gold.

Getting to Know Him

(Olympia, WA) Early this morning Mike had to take the car into the shop to get it repaired from when the uninsured motorist hit us. It's such a pain to be without our car! Mike rented a little car just so he'd be able to get back to pick up our car! If you ever get hit, try to get hit by someone with insurance as a rental car isn't covered otherwise.

While Mike was out, I was in charge of all four dogs. They are all so good! Boogie just followed the lead of the other three and rested. We took a few little walks around the RV park. Boogie is leery of people/dogs/movement, etc. But after a bit of investigation he gets over it just fine. One time during our walk he stepped in a puddle. He got so silly and started darting around this way and that. How cute.

When he'd wake up from a nap he was so good to go find one of his toys and entertain himself.

After playing for a while he'd be ready to nap again. His favorite place to nap is on the pillow next to Slugger. Slugger has always loved touching so he was in heaven when Boogie would sleep with him.

I just can't get over how well behaved this puppy is. He eats nicely, he entertains himself nicely, he comes when called, he respects the other dogs, he sleeps through the night, he's never pottied in the house, he walks nicely on leash, etc. The only problem we've noticed so far is that he likes to eat rocks and cigarette butts. So far we don't think he's swallowed any rocks. Needless to say, our first training is "leave it." He also needs a lot more socialization which we plan to work on just as soon as we get our car back!!

Wazzu is feeling a little put out by the puppy. So all day long she kept going into the puppy's kennel. Keep in mind this crate is small. But it didn't stop Wazzu from squishing up into a little ball to get inside. No matter how many times we made her get out, she'd go right back in.

Silly Wazzu!

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy

(WA/OR) After a day of errands yesterday and a nice visit with my parents and my niece, Yumi, we headed out bright and early this morning. We drove 40 minutes north to Olympia to drop off Slugger and Sparkie as my parents were kind enough to babysit for the day. Mike, Wazzu, and I then drove three hours south down to Salem, OR to finally pick up our new little puppy that we've been waiting for since 18 months ago.

We'd spent at least 12 of those months trying to think of a name - although we'd called the puppy one name during that whole time - thanks to our good friend Pat!

After the first few hours with the puppy, he reminded me of Wazzu. Lots of self control and not very active. But Mike kept telling me that the puppy was just stressed. I don’t know why! He was just taken away from his mom and littermates, driven a hundred miles in a car, put on a plane for a long flight from New Mexio to Portland, OR, then driven 50 miles in the middle of the night, and then given away from the only person he knew to some strangers with a big (although calm) dog.

After finishing all the paperwork and getting some last few instructions we were ready to start our new adventure. We put him into his pretty new yellow crate for the long drive home. He dug at the door and cried for about 15 seconds and then he laid down and went sound asleep. But, of course, we can't go to Salem without stopping at our favorite pizza place!

Once again he was a good little boy and went right to sleep once we started driving again. Even though he was still sound asleep we stopped after about two hours for a little potty break. He's so good on leash already! After another 15 seconds of a soft little cry and pawing at the crate door, he went right to sleep for the remainder of the drive.

Then it was time to meet the rest of the gang! Sparkie wasn't at all interested - she just wanted to see her daddy. Slugger was wagging his whole body and pulling trying to get to see the puppy. But we made him calm down before letting the two boys meet each other.

The puppy then got a quick start on his socialization. He was a little unsure of big dogs but after the inital Slugger greeting all three dogs just ignored him. He then got to meet four more new people before he was put in an x-pen with a couple toys....and me.

We had decided a couple weeks ago to name the puppy “Boogie.” Then a day before we were to pick him up, Mike decided he didn’t really like that name at all. He liked Brillo - which is what we've been calling him for a year. So okay, Brillo it is. But the breeder had started calling the puppy “Boogie” about a week ago. When we got there to pick up the puppy, the breeder, Meg, was calling him Boogie. Suddenly Mike once again decides he likes the name Boogie. Fine with me, Boogie it is. So now I’m trying to call the puppy and absolutely no words come out of my mouth as I have no idea what his name is! The first thing that finally came out was Brillo. Oh my goodness. The breeders had told us a couple months ago to come up with a registered name – which we hadn’t totally done although we'd sure thought about it a lot. Meg said they had an idea - Sunkist’s Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Mike and I both absolutely loved it and decided the puppy would be called Boogie……or Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy…..which of course could be shortened to Brillo!!!! Ha ha.

Meet Boogie! Male, six pounds, 11 weeks old.

Relaxing Weekend

(Port Gamble, WA) Friday, late morning, we left Rochester and drove up to Port Gamble for a weekend trial. We’ve never been here before but what a beautiful place – and a quaint little town. The trial was held in a field that otherwise I guess is a little park. If you looked off in one direction you could see Puget Sound.

The parking was on a hillside which made it quite tricky for those of us in RV's trying to get level. We actually got the most level spot but still had trouble getting level. The agility field was also on a little slope so we had to run up and down a slope while doing the courses.

Quite a few spectators came to watch and they were great. They stayed behind the lines and they were quiet - and just generally very well behaved. I guess someone from the local newspaper must have been there because the Sunday morning paper featured the agility trial on the front page – with three pictures even. Our good friend Karen Hunter and her dog Lindy were one of the pictures. We had very nice weather – some thought it was a little to hot on Sunday. I must say at times it was quite warm and a bit humid too. We were supposed to do a double shot Tunnelers Sunday afternoon but it just got to be so hot that they stopped it and changed it to two single runs. Wouldn’t you know that shortly after the decision was made, some cloud cover appeared and it wasn't hot at all.

But this is trial was put on by a great club. They seemed very organized, had a nice raffle, nice ribbons, nice little Q pins, beautiful NATCH ribbons and poles (which we got!!!!), a very nice hospitality tent, and great judges. One of the judges was from Arizona and we had met her when we'd been down there a couple times. She brought her dogs up with her and we ran them for her in a few runs each day. That was pretty fun. I ran Pokey (who sometimes fit her name) who is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Mike ran Kody who is Border Collie. Boy did Mike have a blast. Running Sparkie and Kody both was a real rush for him. He was so excited when he and Kody ran clean and got 1st place. Kody's "mom" was excited too. Many people told Mike he should get a Border Collie!

Sparkie and Wazzu both ran very nicely and had a really good time. Wazzu and I were perfect all weekend except for Regular. One time she missed the last jump (there’s a story to that!!), one time she took the last jump – except we weren’t done!, and one time we were overtime by .3 – so disappointing!! Sparkie was perfect except for Regular as well. One of the Regular runs she was way above any other dogs performance. But wouldn’t you know on the 2nd to last obstacle (dogwalk) she missed the contact – by a lot! But she had one run where she was the fastest of all Elite dogs of any size – by 4 seconds!!

Wazzu and I got our NATCH-8 on the same Chances run as our friend Andrea and her dog Token got their NATCH-2. So when the 16” dogs were done, the judge told us both to come out and take a victory lap. We decided to do it together. So we had Token go first with Wazzu right behind. The dogs were loving it and the crowd was loving it as well. It was all working out fine until we got to the A-frame. Token runs to the top and stops whereas Wazzu loves taking air. So Taken stopped and Wazzu just about went flying over her. But Wazzu dodged right at the last second. No harm, no foul. When we finished Wazzu just ran over to Andrea and wanted lots of loving. Sweet Wazzu. It was really fun. I think pairs agility like that would be a great game!

We were able to leave around 4:00pm and had a nice uneventful trip back to Rochester.

What a Week.....

(Eugene, OR) We were really hoping they’d finish fixing the RV early this week so we could move on. I tend not to name names and discuss when people do us wrong. But in this case I want to save others from the experience we’ve had these past two weeks.

Our RV is a Beaver (that’s the band name). We have been extremely pleased with our coach. We would highly recommend this brand to anyone and if we ever buy another RV we would not hesitate for a second to buy another Beaver. Beaver is owned by Monaco, who also owns many other brands. We’ve only had very minor things go wrong with our RV - it has been extremely reliable. In the past when we've needed service we’ve gone to the Bend Service Center – since we bought our coach there. The service has always been very good.

But Bend is on the eastside of Oregon and so it takes much longer to get there. So this year we decided to go to the Monaco Factory Service Center located just off I-5 near Eugene. You would think this would be the best place to go since this is where the coaches are built. Not so. If you ever buy a Monaco coach (any brand) DO NOT GO TO THE FACTORY SERVICE CENTER IN OREGON.

Their repair work is horrible (we have more wrong now than when we went in) and their customer service is atrocious – all the way up the ladder.

We went in with an extremely small list of repair items – most of which were just required maintenance items. Based on our experience in Bend, we figured it should take two or possibly three days to get the entire list taken care of. But two long frustrating weeks later they still hadn’t even started on some of the items.

Here's what Wazzu thought about all this waiting:

While there are MANY examples of what went wrong I’ll just share two to give you an idea of what we went through.

We made our appointment in early December 2006. At that time, we gave them our list of items that needed attention. Four times between December and July I called to reconfirm our appointment and to go over the list and make sure all was set. Each time I was told their list matched mine and all was set.

When Mike first arrived he went over the list with our service writer. One item on the list they checked first thing to see if they could see the problem. Right away they told Mike a lock had broken so when the slide would go in and out the out of place the lock would tear the slide seal. The seal would need to be replaced and the lock fixed. Okay, fine.

Finally on Tuesday of the second week they got around to fixing that problem. They got the slide out and fixed the lock and then went to replace with slide seal. Oh, the slide seal must be ordered as they don’t keep those in stock. That will take four business days! That means it won’t be in until next week! Now wouldn’t you think if they noticed on our first day there that we needed a new slide seal and they don’t stock those that they might order the part that first day. I guess that never dawned on them! How can you not figure that out! This is their business that they do every day – how can they not think to order the needed parts.

After I have a very polite discussion with the service manager they decide that I did have a good point. (Duh!) So they decide to put a “rush” on the part. But it will still take a couple days.

Another item we needed was some paint touch up. This had been on the list the entire time as well. Each time we called to go over our list they indeed showed that was on the list. So the first day when Mike arrived he asked about the paint touch up. He was told that was done at the plant down the street when they were finished with the rest of our repairs. We checked on this every day as we never could get an exact answer on how this would work. Each time we asked we were told they check on it and then get back to us. Mike would wait a couple hours for the guy to come back. Finally all the people behind the desk just packed up went home for the day. No one ever gave him any information at all.

So finally when we find out they won’t be doing anything with us for a couple days until the slide seal comes in, we think that this would be a good time to go down the road to get the paint job done. We once again ask about this. So they tell us we first have to get the paint people to come look at the rig and give us an estimate. What?! Why didn’t they tell us this the first day. But okay, we’ll play along. We call the paint department and they come out and give us an estimate and tell us it will take about three days. Okay, we can live with that. But wait…..they are all booked up and can’t fit us in until the end of October. Are you kidding me?! Turns out you have to make an appointment in advance. No one ever told us this even though we probably inquired a minimum of seven times!

Needless to say, we weren’t happy to begin with and now we’re really irritated. Unfortunately, neither Mike or I are big presences and neither of us are very good at confrontation. But since I’m the better of the two it was up to me to try to work this out. It took me a couple of hours to get the nerve up to call the service manager. Normally face to face discussions are better but I just figured I wouldn’t be taken very seriously if I went in and laid down on the floor. So I called on the phone.

When I spoke with the service manager the first time we had an extremely civil discussion. I explained how they had really dropped the ball on our visit. After I described all the things that had gone wrong the service manager was very apologetic and agreed that they had really messed up in every area of our case. He said he’d talk to all the appropriate people so that this wouldn’t happen again.

But this time when I called about the paint fiasco he suddenly turned into a hot head. He couldn’t seem to agree that there was a communication problem. He looked at all our original paperwork and agreed the paint issue had been on our list the entire time. But he said they had noted beside it that they would sub-contract that portion out. Well they never told us that – and doesn’t sub-contract mean that THEY will have someone else do it - not that I’LL have to find someone. After quite a lengthy, and not nearly as polite discussion on his end, he said in a very loud and aggravated voice that Monaco would not be painting our vehicle. The only resolution he had was that he’d give me the names of some other places in the area that I could contact to make arrangements to get the work done. Notice I said “in the area” – and remember I’m now in Eugene, Oregon. He gave me four names: one is in Idaho, one is in California, one is in Washington, and one is in Oregon. To me in the area means somewhere around Eugene!

We had wanted to get this work done in Oregon as it is going to be expensive and we didn’t want to have to pay tax. So we called the one in Oregon and they can’t get us in until September – but we’re off on our U.S. journey by then.

So now it’s two days later and the slide seal that they put a rush on was supposed to be here. But it was nowhere to be found. We can’t wait any longer as we have an agility trial way up on the Washington peninsula this weekend. So we go in to inform them that we can’t wait as we need to leave.

Then we’re informed that since this is on our extended warranty we won’t be able to get this done anywhere else as they’ve already put in a claim to cover the work. It’s like they are trying to hold us hostage! So we’ll have a huge mess to deal with now to get this fixed elsewhere but it will be worth the hassle and expense to not ever have to deal with these folks again!!

The first couple days of our second week here, when we couldn’t be in the RV at all during the day, we went to a park in Eugene. It was in the high 90’s and low 100’s so it was hot. But there is a river that runs through Eugene with nice walking trails next to it. Neither Slugger nor I can walk very far so in the morning we’d all go on a short walk and the dogs would swim in the river to cool down.

We came across a Great Blue Herron as we were walking next to the river.

And we came upon a pond that had many ducks swimming around. They would swim back and forth following us.

The trail was really beautiful with flower beds and benches along the way.

A bit later we came across some pretty geese.

Here Mike, Sparkie, and Slugger try to get some relief from the heat by sitting in the shade of a tree.

Then Slugger and I would go back and lay in the car the rest of the day while Mike and the girls would take a long hike. Mike would find a nice flat place in the shade to leave us while they did their afternoon walks. Slugger was such a good boy. I did a lot of reading to pass the time.

Wazzu enjoyed the walks but really perked up when she’d see a squirrel in the trees.

Slugger’s highlight was when he found a bullfrog along the waters edge and got to chase it way out into the water. If you look closely you can see he also got to swim with some baby ducks.

He also enjoyed swimming with Wazzu.

And Sparkie, well she enjoyed every bit of it. Sticks, squirrels, frogs…..it’s all good.

To get over all our frustration with Monaco, all we have to do is look at our three well behaved (compared to all the very unruly dogs at the Monaco Service Center and other RV parks) wonderful dogs. Then we remember what’s important in life. All you have to do is give each of the dogs a hug and you can’t help but feel more relaxed.

I'll leave you with a couple pictures of Wazzu and I passing time in a field of the neighboring farm.

The Perfect Trial According to Sparkie

(Newport, OR) This weekend we attended a trial in Newport, OR. This is the third year we've done this trial and it is definitely one of our favorite. The trial is nice but it has the huge added bonus of being right near the beach. I truly think that dogs and beaches were made for each other.

Slugger and I spent the majority of the weekend in the RV but I was able to be up just enough to run Wazzu. However, we had our problems. I could only do one quick walk of each course - which turned out not to be enough as I got totally lost on one run. So out of five runs we only got one Q. But Wazzu was running so nicely. The luck just wasn't with us today. Here's our day: Mike ran Wazzu in the first run and Wazzu knocked a bar. Wazzu did the super hard part of the Chances run then I looked away to see where I was going she looked too and knocked a bar. Darn! Got a Regular Q, got a bad contact call in T&G, and I got lost in the 2nd Regular run. But I was so happy to be able to be up long enough to do something with my sweet girl. A big thanks to Mike for warming Wazzu up before each run and cooling her down afterwards for me.

Sparkie had fun, fun, fun. Mike and Sparkie had an absolutely beautiful Jumpers run but missed the very last jump. Their 1st Regular run was beautiful and Sparkie came in a close 2nd. The 2nd run they had a little bobble but other than that it was a fantastic run. They then easily Q'd in Chances, Weavers, and Touch N Go.

After all the runs were done Mike took Slugger to the beach. He had a great time walking on the beach and chasing a few sticks into the water. His leg is coming along well enough that he could have a little "alone" time on the beach.

Then it was the girls turn. Mike and the dogs had a great time romping on the beach and chasing each other around. Just as they were ready to leave, a group of about 10-15 dogs from the trial showed up. Whoo Hoo. They were throwing balls with the chuck-it and all the dogs would go racing down the beach. Sparkie led the way - barking the entire time. She would always get the ball, and as a good dog would, she brought the ball right back every time. They played this game for an hour or so when the group kind of broke up and everyone decided to go home.

Just as Mike was getting back to the car they met up with Pat and her very cool dogs, Quinn, Will, and Tally. Oh goodie - another opportunity to play on the beach!! So off they went again. Sparkie was so happy. I mean, how does this sound for a day: Eat breakfast, play agility all day, get lots of treats, play on the beach for 2 1/2 hours, eat dinner. That has got to be the perfect day.

Sunday, Sparkie started out the day with a bang earning her NATCH-9! Way to go Mike and Sparkie. Sparkie enjoyed the fun victory lap but then of course really wanted her cheese - which of course she got along with a little extra. They ended up going 4/6 today and had some really great runs.

Wazzu was happy today but again not her speediest. And while our day looked a tiny bit better on paper than yesterday it certainly wasn't anything to talk about. But she did seem happy just to be doing "something" with me. Wazzu isn't a cuddler at all. But today while I was lying down ringside she laid right next to me and put her head over my arm. She tries so hard to take care of me!! What a sweetie.

The minute the trial was over we bolted out of there as we had to get to the Monaco Factory Service Center so that we could be there when they wanted to actually fix something on our rig!

It was a little windy all weekend so it seemed a little chilly but so many people got sun burnt - including Mike. I guess that's one advantage to staying in the RV almost the whole time!

Here and There

(OR/WA) On Sunday, Mike dropped Wazzu and me off at my parents house in Olympia. He and the other two dogs then drove on down to Eugene, Oregon to get the RV repaired.

As it turned out, the factory service center leaves a lot to be desired. They didn't even look at our RV until Thursday! We could have stayed at our Woodinville resort four more days! That left Mike with a lot of time to fill with the dogs. The biggest problem is that Slugger can't walk very far as his leg is still recovering from surgery. Yet, Sparkie has enough energy to run all the way back to Washington. Not knowing that the RV wouldn't get looked at for so many days, Mike had to have both dogs out of the RV in case it would get worked on. So they'd take a short walk then rest for an hour or so and then do it all over again.

July 4th, Mike took them for a hike in the forest and then drove over to the beach. What a difference! Inland it was hot! But on the beach it was cool and very windy which made it seem very cold. Even so I think the dogs had a great time.

As usual, each dog wanted to go a different way!

Slugger is pulling hard so his leash is taut. But notice how the wind is blowing Sparkie's leash.

Notice how the grass is being blown to the side.

I'm thinking, however, that this isn't the only windy day they've had at the beach. Take a look at these trees!

To get to the beach they had to cross a little creek

and then walk through some dunes.

After a nice romp on the beach they took a little drive. Look at the beautiful coastline.

The coastline is so pretty. We're so lucky to be able to visit places like this from coast to coast.

I called Mike the next day to see how the dogs did on the 4th and to see if it was very noisy. Mike said they are way out in the country and that the bullfrogs were much louder than the fireworks!

While Mike and the youngsters were hiking and playing on the beach, Wazzu was busy helping my mom and dad take care of me. Wazzu has got to be the most loyal dog. She would only leave my side when highly encouraged to do so. She'd eat or go out to go potty and then run right back down to lay with me.

Mom was so very helpful waiting on me hand and foot all week. She also was very kind to feed Wazzu and take her out for little play times each day. Dad even took her along with him one day on his daily jog. I think Wazzu had a great time but the second they got home she came running downstairs to be with me once again.

By Wednesday I got the idea to walk just outside to lay on the bench on the deck so that I could soak up some sun and get some fresh air. Sure wish I would have thought of that earlier. I'll try to show you the layout.

To the left of this picture is the sliding glass door that leads into the house.

To the right you can see the sound - as shown in this picture.

It was so nice and warm and the view from the deck is so pretty - especially when the weather is so nice. I could watch the boats go by in Puget Sound....

.....could see Mt. Rainier.....

.....and could look at the beautiful flowers in the yard just below the deck.

In the morning hours I got to watch some wildlife as well. Here I captured a Stellar's Jay who was quite noisy.

Just a short time later a squirrel starting playing around and jumping from tree to tree. I tried but was unsuccessful at capturing him while he was in the air.

In addition to the beautiful scenery, there are some deer that like to hang out in and around my parents yard. When I went out to lay outside, of course Wazzu came with me. As I laid down I told her to go down into the yard so she could potty. She got to the edge of the deck stopped in her tracks. I looked over the edge and saw two small deer about five feet from the end of the steps.

Wazzu stood perfectly still and watched the deer graze.

About ten minutes later, a large deer and two teeny tiny babies with little spots came to join the first two deer - but I didn't want to move a muscle as I didn't want to scare the babies, so I didn't get a picture of them. All five deer were less than ten feet from Wazzu but she continued to be a statue.

Suddenly about 20 feet beyond the deer, a squirrel started playing and running around. I figured there was no way Wazzu would have that much self control. Although she saw the squirrel, she still didn't move. I couldn't believe it. This went on for quite some time when suddenly the two little baby deer decided to play and wrestle. This was just too much. Wazzu wanted to play too. So she started to dart down to play when suddenly the deer scattered in all directions. I thought Wazzu would chase them but she stopped immediately. It was so sad. I could see her thinking..."Why did they leave? I just wanted to play too."

Wazzu came back on the deck and stood there for quite some time just watching for them to return.

In fact, she waited so long she got tired standing and had to lie down.

I figured we wouldn't see them again. But about half an hour later sure enough a couple of them came back.

I left the camera outside when I went in for lunch as there wasn't anything inside I'd need a picture of. We hadn't been inside more than a few minutes when something caught both my eye and Wazzu's. We both looked up and there staring in the screen door at us was a large raccoon. Wouldn't you know, my camera was outside. Arg. But of my goodness, Wazzu thought this was very exciting. However, after her raccoon encounter last year, there was no way I was going to let Wazzu out - much to her dismay!

I'll leave you with a couple more pictures of the beautiful view.
