Learning Lessons

(Bandon, OR) This morning Mike, Sparkie, and Slugger went out to explore the area and check out all the beach accesses to see where I might be able to get to the beach easily. They were gone quite some time as they checked out every access a few miles north and south of here.

The time was well spent as they found that almost every access was down a very steep bank. So steep that there are flights of stairs to get to the beach. But they found one where we could park right next to the beach.

We found that taking all four of the dogs someplace at once is very difficult. So this afternoon Mike took Wazzu, Boogie and me to the beach. When we first arrived I was so excited as it wasn't windy! If you look in the background of this picture you'll see a building and an RV. This is where we could park. As you can see, this part of the beach is is where people do their fishing. And it's the only part of the beach with people!

This is really the only area for fishing as this part of the beach is steeper so the water gets deep fairly quickly. When we got to the beach I stopped and asked one of the guys what kind of fish they catch here. He said they mostly catch perch. Moments later I saw a guy reel one in.

The fishing must be good as when we started our walk this one guy told me he'd caught two so far. When we came back a little over an hour later he said he now had nine!

At this section of the beach the waves were pretty big so we kept Boogie on leash as we didn't want to take any chances of him getting swept out to sea. But they seemed to be able to play well nonetheless and picked up just where they left off yesterday.

If you walk down the beach a short ways and turn around and look back, this is what you'd see. If you look on the right back near the bulkhead that is where the fisherman are.

When you get to the closest rocks that you see in this picture the beach becomes extremely flat. Therefore there are no large dangerous waves so it was very safe for Boogie to be off leash.

Freedom on the beach for the first time!

And with every few feet he picked up speed.

Being off leash on the beach is pretty fun!

As he started getting a little more brave he decided to take a run by the water.

He was really good and never went too far at all before turning and coming right back.

While Boogie was busy testing his new found freedom, Wazzu had more important things to do.....like making sure the beach was clear for us.

That was fun! It must have been because Wazzu did this probably 20 times while we were on the beach today. Boogie really was watching Wazzu and trying to learn all the appropriate tasks a dog must do during a day at the beach. He thought chasing the birds looked fun but just wasn't sure if it was okay.

After seeing that we didn't seem to mind, he decided he'd like to be just like Wazzu.

That was so fun that he wanted to everything Wazzu did. He is a huge copycat and has learned so much from the other dogs. He continued on with his lesson. Next he learned how to eat "parts" off the beach.

He helped with sticks....

...and learned to eat mussels.

As we got down near the end of this beach there was this huge rock - probably 50' tall and 100' around. The tip of one end of it was in about six inches of water so we couldn't walk all the way around. We were looking at the part in the water to see if we could see any sea life. Wazzu had waded across the water but Boogie wasn't sure he wanted to do that. Somehow this little guy was smart enough to know that he could run around this huge rock and get to Wazzu. We had never even been around the rock so we have no idea how he figured that out. But here he is zooming around from the other side!

So I mentioned we were at the end of this beach. From this picture you can kind of see what I mean. Just to the right is the rock Boogies was running around - and as you can see he's still going. Straight ahead is a huge rock wall that juts out into the water a few hundred yards. To the left was sand, large rocks, some logs and then just land.

You could climb over the logs and you were on another beach.

As you climb over the logs this is what you see.

If you go out to the end of the rocks on the right you would see:

If you were to look straight ahead you'd see:

And if you went to the left the beach would curve a bit and then go on for miles. We went as far as the first rock where Mike and the dogs went rock climbing. This was steep but Boogie didn't give it a second thought. If Wazzu could do it then he could do it too.

Coming down was no problem either.

From this rock you could look back and see the place I was trying to explain to you about the separation of one beach from the other. You can see a couple little spaces in the rocks - that's where we came through from the first beach.

Everyone was still having a great time but it was time to turn around and go back. Just as we turned around we noticed someone had made some nice little sand castles.

We were getting close to being all the way back and Boogie still wasn't tired! He attacked Wazzu....

....and he ran with the waves.

Wazzu even had a few more bird chases left in her.

Just a couple more pretty shots to share with you as we're getting closer to the end of our outing at the beach. It's just too pretty not to share with you.

Just as we were getting to the car we noticed some seagulls find someones stash of food.

Turns out it was some little kid's pork rinds. He started running up the beach screaming "you stupid birds." Mike tried to explain to him that the birds weren't stupid at all - they were pretty smart. I breathed a big sigh of relief when Mike didn't tell the kid he was the stupid one. I mentioned that to him when we got to the car and he said it took all he had to keep from saying that. Ha ha.

On the way home we stopped at an overlook park. We could see down to the second beach we had walked on.

I'm glad these horses weren't there when we were as Boogie has never seen horses before and I'm not sure what he would have done. But what a beautiful place to ride horses.

When we did make it home, Wazzu and Boogie were ready for a nap. The past few days Boogie has been going under the drivers chair and chewing on who knows what. So I tried to block it off with pillows and blankets. Boogie has decided that is a great place to sleep.

Oops. One extra picture - might as well post it as delete it!

Finally the end! I'm pretty sure you'll never see this many pictures in one post again. This walk only took us just over an hour yet it took me close to eight hours to do this post. So I'm even farther behind now! I'm bushed! Hope you enjoyed the pictures.
