Sticks are the Best

(Winchester Bay, OR) The past three days we just spent at a more relaxing pace – okay maybe it was just me, but everyone seemed to have a good time. After beach outings a couple mornings, Mike took the dogs on lots of two dog hiking outings or in Slugger's case all alone lake outings.

We got all set up and put out our litle Welcome sign. We got many more comments on this than usual since the walking path went right by our little sign.

Monday we went to the beach in the afternoon – as you saw on yesterday’s blog – and there were a fair number of people there. The only empty place on the beach was where there were puppy eating waves! So we decided to do the beach in the mornings. This turned about to be so much better – only one other person on the entire beach! And, the tide was way out so the firm part of the sand was well over a hundred yards (the length of a football field for those of you who are more visual) instead of just the 20 yards we had on Monday. Unfortunately we still had a couple hundred yards of soft sand to walk through before we got to the firm sand that I like.

It was really foggy in the mornings. But even so it was very beautiful in a totally different way.

Of course fog didn’t bother the dogs at all. They were just so happy to have little waves. They were small enough that Slugger could time his leap and jump over the waves as they were coming.

Even so, they still did manage to go over his head at times as you can see from all the water on his head and face.

To me it kind of looks like he's wearing an ocean necklace.

The dogs were pretty excited to a chase stick and they all wanted it badly.

Slugger was the winner of this chase but that didn't stop Wazzu from being determined to get the stick.

Just about there......

Got it. I thought it was interesting how they are exactly in stride.

Neither wanted to give up the stick.

It was quite a struggle as both were determined to keep the stick. They'd run up and down the beach for quite a while holding the stick together, neither willing to let go.

Eventually Wazzu would let go. But poor little Slugger still didn't get any peace as Boogie then decided he wanted the stick. Needless to say, he never came close to getting the stick.

With just little waves rolling into shore, Boogie was a little more interested in trying to be one of the big dogs.

It didn't matter who was playing, Boogie wanted to be involved.

He couldn't keep up but that didn't keep him from trying.

He had a great time running around. He didn't seem to care that he never got the stick.

This next picture isn't really all that great - but I like how it shows each of them concentrating so hard.

A couple times Sparkie actually got the stick!

But as you know, when you get the stick in the water - you get wet. Sparkie tried to run around to dry off but it didn't work.

So she stood still and started licking her chest. Little Boogie immediately ran over and started licking Sparkie too. Every time Sparkie would start licking, Boogie would run over and help. What a nice little brother.

I’ve never had a dog that played soccer before but I might have one now. Boogie doesn’t do this in the RV but on the beach every time we would give him a ball he would play soccer with it.

He would go quite a ways like this.

As we walked further down the beach, we came to the spot where we had been chasing sticks the first day here. And now we could see why the waves were so big – this part of the beach is much deeper than the rest of it. In fact, as we were walking along the beach parallel with the water we came to a spot where the water was now between us and the beach! That doesn’t happen very often. Hopefully this picture will show better than I’m explaining.

We had fun playing on the beach and even though the swimming was much easier in the smaller waves, Slugger’s leg was getting really sore and after just a short time Slugger really wanted to go home.

As we were walking back toward the car, I looked up to see the lighthouse. It looked really cool in all the fog.

Slugger and I took the next couple days off and just walked around the park on the beautiful walking path where you can see the bay on all sides.

The RV’s are all lined up around the bay and have such beautiful views.

This afternoon there was a slight breeze and it must have been just perfect for kite flying as we probably saw 15 different kites way up in the sky. Most were being flown by seniors just out enjoying the day.

It seems to me kites these days are much prettier than the ones we had when I was a kid.

I’d often walk around the park with Wazzu and Boogie. Although most of the time poor Wazzu ended up being walked by Boogie! She put up so well with Boogie jerking her this way a few feet and the other way a few feet and on and on. Poor Wazzu - she's so patient with Boogie.

As we’d walk around we’d see the large majority of the people outside in their little yard cooking, cleaning, and cracking the crabs they’d caught that day. Every one said they got their limits easily.

We were feeling pretty left out so we drove over to the seafood market and bought two crabs (wow, expensive!!) . We then took them back to the RV and cracked and cleaned “our” crabs. Mmmm, crab cocktails….so good!

Right out in front of the RV’s was the walking path that went around the park. Just on the other side of the path was some wild grass/weeds and then rocks that went down to the water. Well, I couldn’t see it but I guess there was lots of nummy stuff in the grass to eat as these ground squirrels would come up out of the rocks and find stuff to eat.

When they weren’t eating they’d be wrestling and rolling around. They weren’t scared of people at all – I guess they’re used to everyone strolling along the pathway. Well needless to say, the three big dogs were fascinated by the squirrels and always wanted to chase them.

When we’d come inside the dogs would totally forget about the squirrels….except for Wazzu. She has NEVER even thought about doing onto the dash in the RV. But while we were here this became her spot. At first she would stand with just her front feet on the dashboard. But after about 30 minutes this became very tiring so she climbed all the way up on to the dash and sat there and watched.

After this got too tiring she’d lie down and watch them for as long as they were there playing – which could be an hour or two. When they’d all leave she’d still lie there and just wait for them to come back.

Everyone that would walk by on the very well used path would see her there and would get a big smile on their face. I’ll say it really was very cute.

One time I needed to take Boogie out for his potty break. I knew it was going to be quick so I let Wazzu come out without being on leash. I’d forgotten about the squirrels. It didn’t take more than a couple seconds for me to remember as there were four of them right in front of us. I told Wazzu to sit and stay – she was only two feet from the critters.

Boogie doesn’t pay any attention to them….hmmm, isn’t that supposed to be his “thing?” Anyway, while I was waiting for Boogie to potty, Wazzu was doing the most beautiful sit/stay you’ve ever seen. You could tell it took every bit of self control she had as her entire body was quivering. I felt sorry for her as this seemed like torture. Fortunately Boogie pottied not too much later and I then told Wazzu to go inside. Amazingly enough she turned and ran inside as fast as she could. You’d think I really trained her well. Don’t tell anyone but Wazzu just knows what to do! Anyway, as soon as she got inside she climbed up on to the dash and watched the squirrels play for a LONG time. What a good girl.

This evening(our last evening here) we saw a very pretty reflection out our front window of the sky in the bay. Just too pretty.

We’ll be sorry to leave in the morning as this was a very relaxing place. Now if this park was in Bandon I think we’d probably spend the entire summer there.

Boogie says he might just stay here as he thinks being a beach dog is a pretty life.
